The Problem With Standard Forecasts

The short-range forecast is not bad at its job. It is being asked to do a different one.

Radar and numerical pressure models are superb instruments. They will tell you whether to carry an umbrella tomorrow afternoon, and they will be right. Push them past about ten days and they fall apart — not because the software is poor, but because the atmosphere itself stops being predictable that way. That is physics, and no amount of computing power fixes it.

Which leaves a gap. The wedding is booked eight months out. The roof crew has a slot in April. The slab pour, the harvest, the shearing, the three-week window when the excavator is available — every one of those decisions gets made months before any model on earth has a single thing to say about the day in question.

So you guess. You look at what the weather “usually” does in April, you cross your fingers, and you find out about the rain event about forty-eight hours before it lands on your open trenches.

Here is the fair objection, and you should be asking it: if the atmosphere is genuinely unpredictable past ten days, how could anyone possibly date next April?

The answer is that this is not the same kind of forecast. It does not attempt to model the atmosphere forward day by day. It reads each day of the year from astronomical cycles — positions and angles that are known centuries ahead — and scores that reading against what your own town’s climate record says is normal for that date. Different instrument, different question, different failure mode. It will never beat radar at Thursday. Radar will never reach April at all.

Note what is not being offered. Nobody is promising rain at 3:00pm on a specific Tuesday, and you should walk away from anyone who does. Which is the only point at which a forecast is any use to you at all.

The method, and where it comes from

The method is not ours. It is George McCormack’s, and it was published in 1947.

We did not invent a mechanism and give it a trademark. The day-by-day method behind your report is McCormack’s, set out in his Text-Book of Long Range Weather Forecasting in 1947 after twenty-three years of research, and expanded into a full instruction course, Long-Range Astro-Weather Forecasting, in 1965. Both have been reprinted and you can still buy them. We would rather you knew that.

It sits inside an older Australian line of the same work. In 1888 the colonial meteorologist Clement Wragge talked a teenager named Inigo Jones into a cadetship in his Brisbane office, and trained him for five years. Jones spent the rest of his life on the one question, and by 1923 — the year he called the break of a long dry spell and the newspapers ran it — Queensland graziers were writing to him for dates.

Jones is not someone we are asking you to take on faith. Thirty years before that forecast, on 3 February 1893, he read the rain gauge at his family’s farm at Crohamhurst, north of Brisbane, and wrote down 907 millimetres for the day. It is still the heaviest daily fall ever recorded anywhere in Australia. He was twenty years old.

Two questions sat behind both men’s work. What makes a season run wet or dry, months before it does it? And can that be dated in advance, rather than guessed at forty-eight hours out?

One thing we will not do, and you should know it before you buy: the report gives you the forecast, not the rules behind it. The maths stays in-house. If what you want is the method itself rather than the reading, this is the wrong product and you should not spend the $97.

Is this a guaranteed daily rain forecast?

No, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling you something worse than this. Long-range cycle forecasting reads each day from astronomical cycles and scores it against your location's own long-run climate record. It gives you the broader windows — wet runs, dry stretches, gale windows, unseasonable temperature shifts — dated 365 days out. Treat it as a planning tool. Do not treat it as a safety-critical warning system; for that, use your bureau's short-range alerts, which are excellent at exactly the job this cannot do.

How does the personalisation work?

Isn't this just astrology?

It uses astronomical position mathematics — the same category of cycle work Inigo Jones and George McCormack built on. We are not going to dress that up as a modern meteorological model, and we don't publish the underlying rules. Call it what you like: it is a long-range cycle method, it is not accepted meteorology, and it is not a substitute for short-range radar. If that description alone rules it out for you, that is a completely reasonable position and you should not buy it.

How is this different from a normal seasonal outlook?

A seasonal outlook from a bureau of meteorology gives you a broad regional probability (e.g. "above-average rainfall likely this season" for an entire state). Your almanac is calculated for your specific coordinates and gives dated wet/dry/windy windows across the full 365 days, not a single seasonal probability statement.

What if my town has limited historical weather data?

The report is calculated from your coordinates and the best available regional climate record for that location. If your exact town has a thin weather-station history, the baseline draws on the nearest well-recorded station — this is disclosed on Page 2 of your report, not hidden.

Why trust a method with roots in the 1940s over a modern computer model?

Modern numerical weather models are excellent at 3-10 day forecasts and unreliable much past that — that's a physics limitation of the atmosphere, not a software problem. Long-range cycle forecasting doesn't compete with radar models on short-range accuracy; it exists specifically to give a directional read on the months current models can't reach at all.

Is $97 worth it if I can't act on it with certainty?

It's priced as a planning aid, not a guarantee — which is why it's $97 and not $970.
